Training Workers Across a Growing Jurisdiction
SMART Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 49 is experiencing an unprecedented level of work across New Mexico and West Texas. Major construction projects, combined with ongoing local work, have created significant demand for skilled sheet metal workers throughout the union’s jurisdiction.
Local 49 has continued meeting those workforce needs while recruiting new members and expanding its ability to train workers for the opportunities ahead.
SMART International Organizer Willy Solorzano recently shared his perspective on the union’s progress and the leadership helping drive it.
One of Local 49’s most important investments is its new apprenticeship training center in Lubbock. The facility establishes a permanent training presence in West Texas and strengthens the union’s ability to recruit and develop workers near the communities where they live.
The training center also creates a long-term workforce pipeline for contractors serving Lubbock, Amarillo, Odessa, and surrounding areas. Apprentices can build their skills closer to home while preparing for careers that support the region’s growing construction and industrial needs.
“Willy understands that growth does not happen by accident,” said Isaiah Zemke, Business Manager and Financial Secretary for SMART Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 49. “His statement reflects what our team has been working toward: meeting today’s workforce needs while building the training and membership pipeline Local 49 will need for years to come. We appreciate him recognizing the people behind that work and the opportunities ahead across New Mexico and West Texas.”
Solorzano also recognized the Local 49 leaders and organizers helping move that work forward, including Zemke; Business Agent Shawn Smith, and Local 49 Officers Chuck Lee, Roy Privitt, and Erick Corona.
Together, the team has worked to support active projects, recruit new members, and keep Local 49 positioned for continued growth. Their efforts are helping contractors access the skilled workforce they need while creating more opportunities for union members and future apprentices.
Through organizing, apprenticeship training, and investment in its members, Local 49 is helping build the workforce needed to support continued economic growth across New Mexico and West Texas.
